Sunset on Gili Meno: the west beach, the six o'clock problem, and what to order

Gili Meno's west coast faces the sunset and we are on it. Happy hour ends at six; the sun goes a little after. A short guide to getting the timing right.

The west coast of Gili Meno faces the sunset. Pomona is on the west coast. That is most of the advice, and the rest is timing.

When the sun actually goes down

We sit a little over eight degrees south of the equator, which means sunset barely moves through the year. Average times run from just after six in May and June to about twenty to seven in January. There is no long summer evening here and no early winter dark. Plan on a little after six and you will rarely be out by more than half an hour.

Happy hour runs every day from 16:00 to 18:00. So the deals stop at six, and the sky starts doing the thing you came for shortly after. Order the second round at ten to.

What happy hour costs

Drinks come in pairs. Margaritas, classic or frozen, are two for 140K; caipirinhas or caipiroskas, the same. A pair of Heinekens on tap is 80K. And two pisco sours with a scallop ceviche for 300K, which is the one to order if there are two of you and you were going to eat anyway. The scallop ceviche is not on the main menu. It only exists between four and six.

Where to sit

When you book, the form asks you to choose an area: the beachfront sand tables, the Bean Bags by the Water, the terrace, or indoor. For sunset, it is the sand or the bean bags. The bean bags seat two and nobody else, which settles the question of who you are bringing. The largest sand table takes six.

Walk-ins are always welcome. If you want a particular spot by the water, book the 17:00 slot. Tables are booked on the hour.

The deals stop at six. The sun does not. Order the second round at ten to.

After the light goes

Music comes on when the sun goes down, and we are open until 22:00. The aguachile is five o'clock food: raw fish, lime and charred green chilli. Once it is dark, the fire takes over. Beef anticuchos in aji panca at 120K, the Peruvian chicken a la brasa at 170K, or 250g of Black Angus picanha at 295K. The last booking is at 21:00.

If you are coming over from Gili Trawangan or Gili Air for the evening, check the time of the last boat back before you order dessert.
