Gluten free and vegan on Gili Meno: the whole menu, sorted
Everything from our kitchen is gluten free and twelve dishes are vegan. The beer is neither, and we would rather tell you now.
At Pomona, eating gluten free means reading the menu like anyone else, because every plate that leaves the kitchen is gluten free. We have written about why that works for Latin American food. This is the practical version: what to order, what to watch, and where the gluten free promise stops.
Where it stops
At the beer fridge. Bintang, Bintang Crystal, Heineken and Corona are ordinary lagers brewed with barley malt. Barley means gluten. Our promise is about the kitchen, and the kitchen keeps it. If you are coeliac, drink the wine, the cold-pressed juices or the fresh juices, and ask the bar about anything else.
One more, for the careful. Three things use oat milk: the banana pancakes, the tres leches chia pudding and the Berry Blue smoothie. If oats are a problem for you, as they are for some coeliacs, ask us before you order those.
Vegan: twelve dishes, marked VG
In the Soil section, headed plant based, seven of the eight dishes are marked VG. Arepa avocado smash, 85K. Scrambled tofu on toasted gluten free sourdough with spiced crunchy tempeh, 75K. Chili con tempeh with kidney and black beans, cornbread and quinoa, 75K. The rice and beans bowl with braised jackfruit, 85K. Corn fritters, 85K. Guacamole with tortilla chips, 85K. The tropical quinoa salad with mango and charred pineapple, 95K.
Only the quesadilla, made with Oaxaca cheese, is vegetarian rather than vegan. Four sides are VG: green coriander rice, fries, roasted baby potatoes in mojo, and nachos with house salsa. And one dessert, the tres leches chia pudding, made with almond, coconut and oat milk.
That is twelve. A vegan table can share three plates from the Soil, two sides and the chia pudding and not repeat itself.
Vegetarian, not vegan
Six more dishes are marked V. The quesadilla, the grilled corn with chipotle mayo and parmesan, huevos rancheros, plantain tostones and eggs, banana pancakes, and churros con chocolate. We worked hardest on the churros. A gluten free churro that does not shatter when you bite it is just a warm stick, and ours shatter.
Spicy, for the record
Three things carry the chilli mark: the aguachile, the chipotle wings, and the Margi'Verde, a cocktail with fresh jalapeno in it.
The kitchen is gluten free. The beer fridge is not. Everything else is on the menu, marked.
If something on the menu is not clear for your diet, message us on WhatsApp before you come over. It is a small island and a small kitchen, and the answer is usually quick.
